Well, at first all I had was just the book and I went thru the majority of it quickly and then went back and took it very slowly to see if I could figure out something that I have been wondering for years. But never have found the secret.

First of all , let me explain my position. I am 55 years old and have been playing since I was a kid. I can play a fair guitar to say the least but I want to improve and get better. I have studied blues scales for the last 7 or 8 years and know them well. But as everyone knows the blues scales doesn't work with all music. So I then learned the major pentatonic scales, again which I know fairly well.

What I am trying to figure out is, when you are improvising, everything sound just like scales played at different tempo's ! How do you improvise and sound like you know what you are doing ?

If it is sounding "like scales," then you're probably staying within the actual scale too much for your own personal taste. Break it up. Instead of playing the scale ascending or descending, apply a pattern to the scale notes. Skip a note or two. Or, try hanging on one note and give it some vibrato for a longer than average duration. Bend a note, release it. Use some hammer ons and pull offs.

You can also take some time to work up some question and answer phrases. Start with 3 & 4 note phrases. Then build up to higher numbers. See page 17 of TSTA. Once you get some cool phrasing down, dont forget to include some techniques.

That is what I have been working on lately. Sometimes it sounds good, sometimes, well lets say I have heard better. But I haven't given up yet.

Thank you for your reply!
